VIA Rail’s Locomotive Engineer Apprenticeship Program is your gateway to an exciting, dynamic career in rail. We’re excited to announce that a new cohort will be launching in Northern Manitoba in September 2025. Recruitment for this incredible opportunity opens from March 3 to April 4, 2025.

This isn’t your typical 9-to-5 job! Railways run around the clock, 365 days a year. You’ll be working flexible shifts, sometimes staying overnight, and tackling new challenges every day. Information sessions for the Northern Manitoba cohort 

Want to learn more about the Locomotive Engineer Apprenticeship Program before applying? VIA Rail invites you to attend one of our in-person information sessions in Winnipeg or Thompson. These sessions are designed specifically for those interested in this unique career opportunity in the region.

  • Winnipeg – March 5 and 6, at VIA Rail Station (123 Main Street, Winnipeg) / From 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
  • Thompson – March 20, at Best Western Hotel (205 Mystery Lake Road, Thompson) / From 10:00 am to 4 pm

Your future on the right tack

If you’re selected, you will complete a 24-month paid training program (approximate timeframe) to become a locomotive engineer and operate trains. Be prepared to study outside of scheduled training activities, as you will be expected to apply new concepts quickly. Rigour, discipline, and perseverance are essential to successfully complete your training. Here’s what VIA has to offer:
